Gallery of Design… At the local store.
I love noticing the creative visual design of things we use and see in every day life. The creative process and imagination of designers is present everywhere. At the weekend, I was putting groceries in my car and stopped to enjoy the scene of the Safeway store in Whitefish, Montana, set against the Summer evening sky and mountains.
I was standing in a parking lot, potentially an uninteresting moment, but right then an enjoyable work of art was appearing! I wondered about the architects and designers who worked hard to make this grocery store beautiful. Thanks!
Within the store is the ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of packaging design, product design, graphic design and printed publications, all framed within the context of space design.

Montana’s Spectacular Springtime Thaw
A sprinkle of snow this Sunday morning, but the Springtime thaw is underway in Montana. Robins are singing and rhubarb is coming up. Click photo to view full size. Every place I’ve lived in the world, without exception, there have been wonder-filled aspects to notice and enjoy. I love sharing the beautiful and interesting things I see through art, words and photography, and hope these creative endeavors inspire and bring enjoyment to others. Have a wonder-filled day :)
Will Early Bird Hummers Need a Helping Hand?
Hummingbirds will be arriving again soon in Montana. In fact, some may already be here, huddled within shrubs while they wait for warmth and food. Timing is of the essence for these amazing birds.
This year, winter has seemingly been extra long in the north west of Montana, and signs of Spring plant growth and blooms have yet to appear in the Whitefish area. I wonder, will the arriving hummingbirds find the food resources they need?
This may be an especially good year to set out sugar feeders to help the early arrivals cope with the cold and absence of nectar. If you feed hummingbirds, to protect the wellbeing of the birds it’s very important to keep the feeder clean and the contents fresh. Only use plain sugar water (4 parts sugar to 1 part water) because, despite being marketed and sold in stores, food color is *not* good for hummingbirds.
I took this photo in 2006, during a balmy Summer evening. To my delight, it was published in the Whitefish Pilot, accompanied by some fascinating facts about the remarkable metabolic capacities of hummingbirds.
